Steps

1. 01Stand 8 to 10 feet from a solid wall in your serving stance with the ball on your non-hitting hand.
2. 02Toss low and controlled, drive your hitting elbow high, and lead the swing with the heel of an open, stiff hand.
3. 03For a float, contact the dead center of the ball with a firm wrist so it comes off the wall wobbling with no rotation.
4. 04For topspin, snap the wrist and forearm over the top of the ball at contact so it rotates forward and drops.
5. 05Do 15 float contacts, then 15 topspin contacts, reading the rebound each rep to confirm the intended flight.

Common mistakes

• Slapping with a loose wrist, adding unwanted spin and dead pace.
• Contacting below center, popping the ball upward instead of driving it forward.
• Dropping the elbow and pushing the ball rather than swinging through it.
