Replace the indoor crossover step with the shuffle that actually works in soft footing, so the platform arrives square instead of sideways.
12 minvolleyball, partner, sand or grass court
Steps
01Start in a ready position wider than you would indoors, weight through the whole foot rather than the balls, because there is nothing solid to push off.
02Have a partner toss two to four feet to one side. Move with short shuffle steps that never cross, keeping your shoulders square to the target the whole way.
03Stop moving BEFORE contact. In sand you cannot pass on the move and control the ball, so a rep only counts if the feet are set at contact.
04Angle the platform with your shoulders, not by swinging your arms, and let the ball come to you rather than reaching for it.
0520 reps each side, scoring a rep only when the feet were set and the pass reached your partner above head height.
Common mistakes
Crossing over as you would indoors, which buries the lead foot and turns the shoulders away from target.
Standing tall between reps, so the first movement is downward instead of sideways.
Swinging the arms at the ball to make up for feet that never arrived.
