A no-jump-to-jump reading drill where the blocker keys the hitter's arm instead of the set to time the block.
12 minnet, volleyball
Steps
01Set up across the net from a partner who acts as the hitter holding a ball.
02Track the play with your eyes in sequence: ball to the setter, then snap your focus to the hitter's approach and hitting arm.
03Load your legs as the hitter plants the last step of the approach; do not jump on the set, jump on the arm.
04Time takeoff so your hands reach full penetration just as the hitter's hand would contact the ball (together on a fast set, a beat later on a high set).
05Match your hands to the hitter's arm-and-shoulder line to take away their strongest angle, then reset.
Common mistakes
Jumping with the set and already descending as the ball is contacted.
Ball-watching the whole rally and losing sight of the hitter.
Committing the feet before reading the attack tempo.
