Use the Block

Steps

1. 01Have a partner block with hands deliberately wide and still.
2. 02From a set, aim at the outside hand and swing high, so the ball deflects out rather than down.
3. 03Take five at each hand, calling which one before you approach.
4. 04Then have the blocker move late, and take whichever hand they give you.
5. 05Score only balls that land out of bounds off the block, or in the court past it.

Common mistakes

• Aiming at the middle of the block, which is the one place two hands are solid.
• Swinging down into the hands, which deflects straight to the defender.
• Deciding to use the block after the approach has started, so the arm slows down.
