High Line, Deep Corner

Against one blocker and one defender the deep line is the longest ball on the court. Hit it high and heavy rather than hard and out.

Steps

01Mark a three-metre box in the deep line corner.
02Have a partner set you from a normal pass, and hit ten balls at the box.
03Contact above and slightly behind the ball, finishing long rather than snapping down: the ball has to travel.
04Score only balls that land in the box, and count how many of your misses were long.
05Then add a blocker taking the line, and hit the same ball anyway to feel how much space is still there.

Swinging down on a ball that has to travel the length of the court, so it lands in the net or mid-court.
Turning the shoulders to the line so early the blocker moves with you.
Hitting the line hard when the defender is already there, instead of high and deep behind them.
